Directory visibility is a separate choice

A directory restriction concerns public disclosure. It does not rewrite your name, erase a record or remove every lawful disclosure route.

In this article

“My information is in a university record” and “my information is visible publicly” are different statements. A privacy review should ask which disclosure is in question before promising that a single setting will hide everything.

Public directory information is a category

The Registrar’s FERPA page says directory information is public unless restricted. Its list includes contact information and academic descriptors; do not assume “directory” means only a name in an online search.

The personal-data FAQ directs students to Privacy Restrictions under Student Profile on Student Homepage. The student-forms index separately names forms to restrict directory information and remove a restriction. Follow current official instructions for your intended change.

What a restriction should not be made to promise

  • A new name: restriction and name change are separate operations.
  • Deletion: suppressing a disclosure does not mean the underlying education record is erased.
  • Universal secrecy: FERPA has specified exceptions, including legitimate educational interest and health or safety emergencies.
  • Removal from every old copy: the reviewed source does not promise to recall prior disclosures or third-party copies.

Before removing a restriction

First identify why you want to change it. A specific recipient’s need for a record may call for a specific authorized process rather than opening broad directory disclosure. Ask the university which route fits that purpose and what the requested change affects. This is an editorial decision aid, not a prediction of the answer.

If personal safety is part of your concern, do not describe it in this site’s search or comparison tool. Ask the university about your particular circumstances through an appropriate private channel. We do not inspect restrictions or offer a safety guarantee.

For permission aimed at one person, continue with consent and account access. These are deliberately separate questions.

Evidence & limits

Public sources checked October 15, 2026. This is independent editorial explanation, not legal advice or a test of an authenticated university account.

  • FERPA and Student Privacy — Student disclosure, consent, directory restriction, inspection and amendment routes; statutory exceptions remain.
  • Updating Personal Data FAQ — Privacy Restrictions route; used only for personal-data questions, not registration.
  • Registrar student forms — Public index names both restriction and removal forms; search-index text reviewed, direct page timed out.
